VICTORIAN PARQUETRY ANTIQUE WRITING TABLE BY DONALD ROSS
DESCRIPTION
An excellent quality English Victorian freestanding satinwood and purpleheart banded antique writing table desk attributed to Donald Ross. The table top and frieze features his distinctive ebony and boxwood geometric trellis parquetry inlaid design with inlaid ebony dots to the diamonds.
The table top has brass mouldings to the edge and frieze and to the top of the square tapering legs which have brass fluting to the corners and terminate to square brass castors. There are two polished mahogany lined drawers both with original working locks which come with a key and the table retains its old gold tooled inset leather.
Donald Ross was born in 1830 and was a highly skilled and celebrated furniture maker in the second half of the 19th century. He worked at 13 Denmark Street in London and showcased his work at the Great Exhibition in London, 1851. He also supplied top furniture makers and retailers including Edwards & Roberts and his furniture is on display in the Victoria & Albert Museum in London.
