DESCRIPTION

An early 20th century Japanese framed antique woodblock print by Koson Ohara ‘Three Sparrows in a Rain Shower’ signed with the artists name to the bottom left-hand corner with red seal

 

The picture is in its original ebonised frame and the print is in excellent condition.

Height – 36 cm (14 ¼ inches)

Width – 20.5 cm (8 inches)

Depth – 0.7 cm (½ inch)

Koson Ohara was born in 1877 in Kanazawa, Japan and was one of the most important kacho-ga (bird and flower) woodblock prints artists of the early 20th century shin-hanga (new print) movement. Early in his career, many of Koson’s prints captured a sense of stillness and elegance, favouring birds and flowers. Koson taught at Tokyo School of Fine Arts around 1900. He also went under the names of Ohara Hoson, Ohara Shoson and Ohara Koson. He died in 1945
