GEORGIAN MAHOGANY BOW FRONTED CHEST OF DRAWERS ATTRIBUTED TO GILLOWS
DESCRIPTION
A fine George IV figured mahogany bow fronted antique chest of drawers attributed to Gillows of Lancaster. The five graduating drawers all have cockbeading to the edges, and retain their original turned mahogany knobs and inlaid diamond shape bone key escutcheons.
The chest of drawers has crossbanding to the edge of the top, triple reeded moulding to the base, and it stands on splayed bracket feet. All the drawers are oak and pine lined and run smoothly. Each drawer has a working lock and the chest comes with a key.

Gillows of Lancaster was founded in 1730 by Robert Gillow who was a cabinet maker from humble beginnings. He had direct access to exotic and top quality imported timber from the West Indies and created the finest quality furniture. In 1757, Robert went in to partnership with his son Richard, who was an architect and a good businessmen with ambition, who rebuilt the workshops and woodstores. In 1768, Robert I son, Robert II joined the family business opening a shop in Oxford Street London. Gillows of Lancaster and London had a renowned reputation for their quality of work and helped furnish many aristocratic houses. They are regarded as one of the best British furniture makers of all time.
